Program Initiatives
Global Leadership through Timeless Service.
I.Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) Initiatives:
The goal of the Emerging Young Leaders program is to impact the lives of 20,000 girls in grades 6th through 8th by offering tools to help develop life-long skills by participating in four AKAdemies: 1) Leadership Development, 2) Educational Enrichment, 3) Civic Engagement, and
4) Character Building.
DPO Suggestions:
1. Continue with the annual Education Summit and the Celebration of Black Men
2. Partner with the Boys and Girls Club
3. Partner with the Ann Arbor NAACP in their “Youth Council” effort
II.Health Initiatives:
The goal of this initiative is to raise awareness and education related to heart disease and stroke among women in minority populations and to fulfill partnerships with the American heart Association/American Stroke Association.
A. Asthma prevention and management Initiative – This initiative will benefit children and families enrolled in Head Start programs with the goal of early diagnosis, treatment options, parental education and advocacy.
B. Environmental Stewardship and Management Initiative – This initiative promotes strategies and awareness campaigns to encourage energy efficiency, conservation, eco-living, reforestation, urban gardening, education and empowerment of consumers with limited resources, “go green-living green” eco-tourism, opportunities for women owned businesses, environmental zones in urban communities, healthy life styles, and advocacy for and legislation related to public health and environmental justice.
DPO Suggestions:
Develop activities that will address the following:
1. Nutrition and Obesity (First Lady Michelle Obama’s project)
2. Asthma
3. Environmental Stewardship & Sustainability
4. Exercise and physical fitness program for Sorors
III.Global Poverty:
The goals for this initiative are to end hunger, preserve the environment and empower women. The program will provide food production skills and training in self-reliance through gifts of seeds, livestock and training in environmentally sound agriculture. Education in sustainable food practices will make women equal partners in ending poverty and hunger. We will have global partners for self-help projects and awareness campaigns within the United States and abroad. Alpha Kappa Alpha will continue its membership and consultative status with UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization).
DPO Suggestions:
Partner with one or more of the following organizations:
1. Delonis Shelter
2. Safe House
3. SOS Crisis Center
4. Staple Center
5. Voices for Action – Dept. of Human Services
IV.Economic Security Initiative:
This initiative expands the current programs related to wealth building and allocation of resources, home ownership, assets protection, estate planning, access to capital, support and empowerment of female owned businesses and urban enterprise zones.
DPO Suggestions:
1. Uplift, support and encourage local entrepreneurs by giving them the opportunity to vend at chapter meetings, and conferences
2. Administer workshops at chapter meetings on financially fit practices
V.Social Justice and Human Rights Initiative:
These initiatives will address gender equality issues including: human trafficking and domestic violence, services for children with incarcerated parents, youth aging out of foster care and children in homeless shelters. Voter empowerment, access to technology, training of parents as advocates for educational and health care needs of children and support of the arts will be emphasized.
DPO Suggestions:
1. Partner with the Dept. of Human Services for “Youth aging out of foster care.”
2. Resume the “Student Art Exhibit” project.
3. Connections Committee
VI.Internal Leadership Training for External Service Initiative:
This initiative will afford Alpha Kappa Alpha members leadership training at all levels within the organization. It will serve as a catalyst for members to reach their fullest potential as empowered leaders in service to Alpha Kappa Alpha and other organizations and institutions.
