Greetings from the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Delta Psi Omega Chapter and welcome to our website where you can learn more about our chapter, programs and events.
Alpha Kappa Alpha is the first Greek-letter sorority established and incorporated by African American college women. The sorority was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Delta Psi Omega Chapter was chartered on Saturday, December 4, 1948, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Since that time, our talented, dedicated, visionary and diverse membership has carried on the Alpha Kappa Alpha tradition of providing “Supreme Service to All Mankind.”
From the Civil Rights Movement through Black Lives Matter, Delta Psi Omega Chapter has advocated for social justice and racial equity, promoted voter education, mobilized voter registration, and supported the preservation and sharing of African American culture and history, including through its involvement in the founding of the African American Cultural and Historical Museum of Washtenaw County, of which every chapter member is a member, with several chapter members serving in its leadership.
Over its many years, Delta Psi Omega Chapter has supported our local youth, including through the award of hundreds of scholarships, for need and merit; the engagement of middle and high school students in our leadership development and college readiness programs; and our engagement of elementary students through our Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Literacy Program, through which we read to young students books featuring black characters, history and culture. In 2023, Delta Psi Omega Chapter implemented Alpha Kappa Alpha's most ambitious childhood hunger program to date, the Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack (CHIPP) program. Through the CHIPP™ program, Delta Psi Omega Chapter provides 60 elementary school children, who have demonstrated need, with meals and snacks to support them on weekends and holidays during the school year.
In its signature event, Delta Psi Omega Chapter celebrates the community's Black men. In its annual Celebration of Black Men event, Delta Psi Omega Chapter recognizes and honors Black Men who are often overlooked and under appreciated. We recognize the accomplishments of Black men who have achieved in the areas of scholarship, service, and their professions, and who have positively impacted our local community.
Delta Psi Omega Chapter will continue its work in 2024, implementing programs that address childhood hunger in our local community; raise awareness of mental health challenges and resources; uplift the community; promote economic wealth, financial wellness and entrepreneurship; support our environment through tree planting, gardens, and waste-reduction initiatives; continue our tradition of promoting the vote through voter education, registration and mobilization; and engage young people, including through our Youth Leadership Initiative, a youth-led, interactive leadership development program for children aged 11 to 13 years.
We welcome you to browse our site and learn more about our programs, and we invite you to attend our public events.
